Just four days on from captaining Manchester United to victory over Sunderland and Marouane Fellaini found himself back on the bench against Anderlecht. 1Jose Mourinho opted for the midfield duo of Michael Carrick and Paul Pogba and early signs suggested his decision had paid off. 2United dominated in the first half of Thursday's Europa League quarter-final first leg, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan breaking the deadlock in the 36th minute. Article continues below 3Marcus Rashford's initial shot was saved by Ruben Ivan Martinez but Mkhitaryan was on hand to fire home from a tight angle. It was all one-way traffic until half-time but come the second 45 minutes, the tables turned and suddenly United found themselves on the back foot. Article continues below 4And Anderlecht's pressure eventually told when Leander Dendoncker headed past Sergio Romero in the 86th minute to draw his side level. United switched off at the vital moment and allowed the 21-year-old enough space to salvage a point heading into the second leg at Old Trafford. However, there was one player to blame for Anderlecht's goal - you've guessed it, Fellaini. The much-maligned Belgian was brought on with 15 minutes remaining to help defend United's lead but when they needed him most, he dozed off. In the footage below, it's Fellaini who is marking Dendoncker, but when the cross comes in, he stands and watches as his countryman roars into the box and heads home. FELLAINI FORGETS HOW TO MARK United fans were far from impressed with Fellaini's moment of laziness so, naturally, they slammed him on social media. Here's how they reacted. TWITTER REACTS So poor from Fellaini. Carrick summed up United's performance by describing it as "sloppy" in a post-match interview with BT Sport. "It's frustrating. We were so in control but got sloppy, we have to kill teams off," he said. "We should have won that game. "They had one chance and scored a header. We need to be more ruthless, it's as simple as that. We were too comfortable. We got sloppy. "I just feel we've got to find that difference to kill teams off. It's not the end of the world but we are better than that. It's that little edge that makes the difference in the end, but we'll look forward to the next game." Do YOU want to write for GiveMeSport?
